POLICE have arrested the firefighter dad of one of four firemen killed in the Atherstone factory blaze on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the deaths.

Paul Stephens, 54, was among three junior managers quizzed by Warwickshire Police last week as they continue to investigate the November 2007 tragedy.

"They should be special days," he said, "but without Ashley, they're just constant reminders of what happened."

Mr Stephens, a firefighter with the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service for 30 years, also recalled how the intensity of the blaze increased throughout that tragic evening.

By 11pm, one man was already dead; three others were trapped inside the inferno.

The distraught dad had to later tell his family that one of those missing was Ashley, who had recently had a baby son, George, with fiancee Emma Crocker, 17.

"We were desperate to rescue our guys," Mr Stephens recalled, "but the sheer scale of the fire made that impossible.
