A MOTHER has described as a miracle how her five-year-old daughter survived after falling from a fairground ride.

But Caroline Ward is also angry that her daughter Taylor was allowed on the ride in the first place at Ballinasloe Fair in Co. Galway.

Mrs Ward, who is from nearby Tuam, said there was a 4ft height restriction on children going on the ride and that her daughter was a foot and a half below that.

'I was bringing my daughter and my niece on one of the other rides but I stopped to change from my boots into shoes.

'We were due to go on one of the small, low rides which would have been fine for a five-year-old but my niece got tokens and herself and my daughter were allowed go on this other ride. I couldn't believe it when I looked up and saw them flying around on this high thing.' Mrs Ward said that her daughter apparently slipped under the restraining bar and was
embroidered patches holding on upside down for a time before she fell to the ground.

'It's a miracle she wasn't killed stone dead,' said Mrs Ward.

She said her daughter was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe suffering from bruises, a big lump on her head and damage to her teeth and one of her thumbs.

'The poor little girl is traumatised,' she said, and called for fairgrounds to take extra care.

Ballinasloe Fair will continue until next Sunday.
